Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002 - 11:26 p.m. Well today there was yet another "Millions for something or other" march on Washington today. Now, I think that organized protesting is a wonderful thing. It is what makes this country what it is, but come on. The last few Million people marches were more like "A couple people marches." Anyway, today there was a largish gather on the national mall to demand Reparations for Slavery. Now, as some of you may know I am not from Africa, nor were any of my ancestors. More importantly none of my relatives ever had any slaves, nor were they involved with slavery. However, I am Irish and here is some news for you, a lot of Irish people came over to America as 'Indentured servants,' i.e. slaves with an illusion of proposed freedom. Now should I organize a Million Irish March on Washington? The cost of all that beer is just staggering.... any way, the government doesn't owe my ancestors anything, nor do I think every Black person in America deserves to have land and a great big check from the government because their ancestors may have been slaves. Let's make one thing clear, I am anti-slavery. I say no to slavery, and I say it loud and often. So, the point of all this is that at the Millions for Reparations rally there were not that many people, and most of them seemed to be speakers. On C-Span this woman was talking about her lawsuit against various corporations and she paused to point out her mother (very nice of her) who was seated in some sort of roped off VIP area with 5 rows of chairs. She was the only person in the entire area. I don't know what that means, but I suppose it means most people think of slavery as what it is, a horrible part of our history as a nation. Anyway, that is my take on slavery. I know you were all wondering when I would get to that!
